The Potato Chip Experiment.

Yes, it was an experiment. I have been looking for low salt potato chips at the grocery week after week: there used to be a brand that was in stock, but that got discontinued a few months back. I was looking on line and found a recipe for microwave chips. It looked easy enough that should have been my first warning.

I grabbed a couple of potato last night at the grocery. I re-read the directions on the web and got started this evening. I got my sharp knife out started slicing thinking I was on my way to a nice little home made treat. I got the oil out of cabinet drizzled a little bit over the slices. I loaded them up in a bowl and started the microwave. The directions said it should take just a few minuets. I put the express cook on 2 minuets and watched closely waiting for the browning that should have occurred quickly. The directions I read said to keep a close eye, they turn crispy quickly.

Not the results I was looking for as the beep rang. I hit the button on the microwave button for another 2 minuets. Again I was watching closely waiting for that quick browning of the edges, for the perfect crisp tasty treat. There was nothing, a bit of noise, and none of that crisp chip smell. Quizzically I looked at the plate; the chips were looking rather soggy. I had nothing to loose at this point so I hit the 3 minuet button and walked away to grab the cell phone. I figured it might be like the watched pot that doesn’t boil. I was hoping for the best, but was loosing my faith in the recipe. I walked back to the kitchen to check on the chips, nothing crispy in my microwave.

I went ahead and pulled one of the fry pans out and greased it up: I had half a potato sliced and oiled and didn’t know what else to do with it. I tried a couple of chips in the hot oil, but it just seemed to make a hash brown type of mess. I ended up dicing the rest of the almost potato chips and made hash browns instead. It was a treat, but not exactly what I was looking for. I have a few extra plates and a fry pan to clean up tonight, but it was an interesting experiment.

I think there must be a way to do these little chips in the microwave; others had success with the recipe according to the reviews on line. I will give it another go around later: smaller slices and perhaps less oil or different oil. I might just have to got to the specialty grocery store and check out their selection of chips: perhaps they will have some salt free chips.
