Condensed milk and It’s Complicated.

I met up with a friend yesterday and hit the matinee to see It’s Complicated. I had seen the reviews, but the story line looked good and the actors looked great. I don’t think the male reviewers got a lot of the comedy. There were only women in line when I got to the theater, not a man to bee seen in the chick flick line. I laughed so hard during the movie, I thought it was funny.

I decided to hit the grocery store last night. I was low on milk and figured with the extra time I might as well knock that task off my list for the week. I grabbed my green shopping bags, my list and headed off. It was a slow time at the store, there was even parking available on the first try. I live near downtown and the neighborhood store I use has to be one of the busiest for that chain. It is open 24 hours and it always has great people watching. I don’t think there is a regular priced grocery downtown yet, with all the growth of the high rises buildings, they have not gotten the support of a major grocery store yet. There are a few high end and specialty stores. That means a lot of downtown residents use my neighborhood store as their shopping spot along with a densely populated neighborhood.

I wondered through the isles, checking my list, looking for a few extra items that would make the week easier. I was able to skip a few rows since it was a stock back up week and not a full shopping run. I haven’t been using a lot this past month with the holidays and eating out a bit. I got the bread, the fruit and the frozen dinners I needed for the week. I headed down and grabbed a bag of salt free tortilla chips and a can of soup for later in the week when it’s supposed to be cold. I headed to the bead isle and remembered I had half a loaf in the freezer I could use. Being single, I often find that as I unpack from the store, I end up splitting items and putting half back otherwise I end up throwing a lot of things away. I made my way to the checkout, double checking my list. I had this nagging feeling that I was forgetting something. I just couldn’t figure it out. I got home and as I was putting the groceries away I realized I forgot the milk for my coffee.

I don’t like the taste of the powered ‘coffee mate’ type stuff so I keep a couple of cans of condensed milk on hand for coffee emergencies and for cooking. I have often gotten home in the middle of the night from long weekends, vacations or work when the last thing I want to do is go to the busy grocery store. It will get me by for a few days and I can avoid that task until I am ready. I didn’t want to get back in the car, drive back to the store and fix my shopping oversight. This morning is one of those emergency mornings: I opened the can of condensed milk and it is flavoring my caffeine fix this morning. I will have to hit the grocery again this week, but this morning, I can get by without milk.
