Wow some things just never change

113002 Family fights, not me this time.

Dad and I spent the day together. We went to Fort De Soto and spent part of the day just lounging and walking along the beach. It was nice to visit with him one on one. We talked a lot about life, things we did and things we wish we might have done differently. I found out some keys to researching my moms parents. I had been looking for a key name and could not remember. There was a big scandal and my mom just blocked it out. She claimed she had no idea. I will research these tidbits when I get back home.

I found out why I never got to got to Ireland with Adie, my grandma. She had always said she would take me to see the relatives. She got deported from Ireland on her last trip. She was transporting “stuff” in Stew Leonard’s bags from the south to Northern Ireland and got caught. She was in her 70‘s when she was doing this.

We arrived at Dad’s place to see my stepsister, Dawn and meet her kids. I have never met them. We were going to have dinner with them. We go to pull in the driveway and Dawn, the kids and Aunt Somebody were packing the car up and leaving. Dawn and Barb got into a huge fight. Dawn was in tears, Barb was furious (watch out for that temper), and the kids were crying. I guess it had to do with discipline and
the kids running the house. I tried to be diplomatic but as the tale of the event unfolded, I could only think, Some things never change. Dawn “took off” with the kids for the second day in a row. Barb “left dawn and the kids on the street” and went shopping. The family got involved, everyone was outraged and everything went to hell quickly.

I made different choices than Dawn and I am so happy I did. I moved to Texas and got my self a little place I could afford. I didn’t have relatives pay for my house. I didn’t marry someone to escape the family. I took my knocks and moved on. Dawn and her husband are so stuck in that rut. The family is in all there business. Poor Dawn, come the 1st of the year, she will have the mother in law living under her roof. She has her grandmother every weekend and two kids. Her husband doesn’t like to work, but somehow affords all his toys. He couldn’t afford to come to FL but he can go fishing for two weeks in the Yucatan. I wonder how she will fair, but she made her bed. She had choices to make and now she is paying the price.
