Bad boys, Bad Boys what ya gonna do when they come for you? Bad boys bad boys.
01/04/2003

Ok so the day started out stressful and was getting worse when I decide to go to the casa for a quick lunch break. I nuke my lunch, surf the web and am in better spirit as I walk out the front door and head back to work. I check the mailbox on the way back, sometimes we get the mail early, sometimes late in the day.

Pop over the fence to see what is in the box as a police cruiser ambles by. I look to see who is driving but the sun is glaring off the windshield and I can’t see. I walk up the parking lot to the office and the officer pulls in behind me. No big deal, I think it may be one of the many officers I know from the neighborhood, just stopping to socialize.

"Put your purse down” roars the officer. I look at him stunned, he had dark glasses and I can’t quite place who he is. “Put it down on the ground.” OH I say, you are serious, I am waiting for one of my friendly officer to roll the window down and start to laugh, but NO. “I just saw you look in that mailbox” Yup, I reply, it is mine. “ I need to see your ID” Ok, I need to dig for it. As I hand it over to said officer I snappily reply, I guess you are new to this area. (That doesn’t make him happy.) “This ID says you live at the apartments” Yup, I never changed the address I reply. “So what are you doing looking in the mailbox?” It is my house. “Where are you heading?” To my office I reply, if you let me dig in my purse, I will give you my business card. As I hand the business card to the officer, I again ask him what division he works for. He quizzically stares at the ID and the business card “ So you own the house and work next door.” Yup I reply. I work and live on this block, what division do your work for? This time he tells me he is Street Response. I had a lot of snappy remarks running through my head like aren’t you suppose to be working hookers this week, but decide to be nice as things are not going very well. I decide to be courtious, since we don’t know each other, let me introduce myself. I am Devota, I am very involved in the neighborhood policing and work with our area representatives. I tell officer K. that I do know officer Jim and do attend the commanders forums on a regular basis. I am awaiting to be appointed to the Chiefs forum. About that time the nice young newer officer that is on patrol in our neighborhood pulls in behind to back up officer K. He pulls in and looks, I thought I saw his eyes up to the sky but that may have been my imagination. I do a slight waive, to him and he acknowledges me and backs down the driveway.

All is now well with officer K. he tells me to let Jim know we met as he now is OK with my checking the mailbox. I have to say, I was a little rattled as I now amble back to the office. I decided to call our local rep, Jim but I remember he is generally off on Fridays. I end up calling the Admin Assistant just to spread my little gossip. A. I say, you won’t believe what just happened, officer K. from street response just I’d me in the parking lot. Will you tell him when he gets back from his shift that I am one of the “good guys” by the way, where is the paperwork for the appointment? Oh, its just a nomination then the paperwork. We are working on it and I will call you when I know what the next step is.

I was thinking last night on the way to Pet Smart, I wonder how much shit this officer K. is going to get when he gets back to the station? My ears are burning at about 7:30 and wonder if he is getting harassed. The police in my neighborhood don’t profile by race, I am as white as they get. I had to giggle, he is quite handsome and I wouldn’t mind if he called for a date. It would be a funny story about how we met. I can see it now, Yah, I pulled your mother over for looking in mailboxes and fell in love with her. Giggle giggle
