Hero’s of Indy Race and IRL Championship red flagged.
10/13/2003

The best part of the day was the Hero’s race: Johnny Rutherford, Lloyd Ruby, Tom Sneve, Pancho Carter, Arie Luyendyk… and the list goes on. These were drivers I have heard about for years, I have seen some of them race, I have heard there names for years. To see them lined up in there roadsters was just awesome.

Full race results: http://www.texasmotorspeedway.com/media/viewnewsrelease.asp?Article=227 They raced , no fluffing the results here, they were out to make a win. They were instructing there crews after practice on Saturday, getting the cars right for the race on Sunday. The drivers ranged from 75-43 years old. This whole event just put a huge smile on my face.

The IRL race/championship got red flagged 5 laps short. There was a horrid crash in turn 3. Kenny Brack and Thomas Schecter got together. The car Kenny was in just went flyin in pieces, I can not believe he is even alive. Thomas managed to get out of his car but it took quite a while to get Kenny cut out of what was left of his car. In the stands, we were just waiting for the helicopter to start up but it seemed to take forever. I heard on the scanner that he had fractures to his extremities, he was awake and alert but in critical condition. There is not much news this morning, he had surgery last night. It is a wait and see mode. The race was called 5 laps short.

The celebrations in victory lane went on: Gil DeFarron won the race, it was a nice way to start his retirement. Scott Dixon was crowned champ for the season. It is exciting to see the IRL cars on the Texas track. They are fast, the race goes quickly and the competition was fierce.

I headed out to the parking lot after watching the celebrations looking for some souvenirs but I was a little late, most of the vendors were packing up. I managed to get back to Austin by 10:00 after a non stop trip back down the highway. Glad to see Saba, glad to sleep in my own bed.
