The Phoenix track got reworked since I was here last year. They took the pedestrian bridge out, put in a tunnel then repaved the track. Lots of cars were slipping on turn 4 where the track was reworked. The cars just were not sticking there. They widened turn 2 by about 15 feet so there is major changes to the track.
I watched Winston Cup qualifying and practice today. The funniest thing I heard on the scanner before the batteries went dead was Tony Stewart saying he was going to make the spotter drive, the shock guy would become the engine guy … before the weekend was out. It made me chuckle. He ended up getting a 6th place start, I guess they got the car together.
Ryan Newman got his 10th Bud poll of the season, Brian Vickers then Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Gordon Rusty Wallace, Tony Stewart, Kurt Bush then Dave Blaney managed to smoke them and landed in 8th. He was the last to qualify and blew the field away! The media, TV and Radio didn’t even carry the run, they were dashing to get the Truck race on the air. Qualifying ran a bit over.
The truck race was rather exciting 150 laps, 150 miles. Kevin Harvick managed to win, Ted Musgrave then Dennis Setzer, Carl Edwards, Bobby Hamilton Jr. then Texas driver David Starr. There was lots of back and forth in the top 5. It was a rather exciting race. The points race in the trucks is still way to tight. The top 4 are still only 40 point apart.
Brother and I stayed after the race to watch Track Side Live. It was funny, all the guys were dressed in Halloween costumes. It was kind a funny. Hopped in the hot tub after I found a suite at Wally World. Heading to the track in the morning to see the Winston Cup practicesand the Bush race. I Can’t wait, just have to sleep a little first!
