Rain delays at Indy, late for the drivers meeting…
05/31/2004
Oh boy did Robby have a frustrating day yesterday. I dashed home from church to find the Indy 500 was in a rain delay. The rain lasted for a two hours. When the cars finally got on the track, on lap 27 it starts raining again. Robby had to leave the Indy and get to Charlotte. His backup driver took over the seat and off he went to the Coca-Cola 600.
Well, he was a bit late for the drivers meeting and ended up starting in the back. At one point in the race, he was 3 laps down. It sounds worse than it was, there were a bunch of drivers that got lapped early. I was switching between the 500 and the 600 for quite a while yesterday. I missed the Q&A with Robby, hope I can find it somewhere on the web. Robby ended up 20th in the Cup race and when the checkered flag fell at Indy, his car driven by Jaques Lazier ended up 29th at the Indy 500.
I did the best I could to keep good thoughts headed Robby’s way; I had my turkey sandwich, I had my milk standing by but it just didn’t work out. It sounds like there are some scheduling changes brewing for the Indy 500 next year that wouldn’t let the double be attempted again. Indy wants to move the race up a couple of hours. Oh my dream of attending the double may just be going away along with Robby’s dream of driving it.
Saturday night I was down at the local short track: legends, street stock and pro stock races. The event was lightly attended but everyone seemed to have a good time, myself included. My weekend so far has been racing, racing and more racing 28 hours so far….
