Big city = Small town
06/09/2004

Sometimes I think Austin is just an overgrown small town. I was doing a bit of research yesterday and had an answer to my all questions in a little over 5 hours. It helps to know who to ask.

I attended a job fair yesterday, it was organized by the local newspaper, I had registered for this about a month ago. I don’t know what I was expecting but there were hundreds of folks there when I showed up. The newspaper did some advertising and I am sure thousands of folks attended. I did manage to get my resume in a few hands. I don’t know if it will lead to any interviews, but I was willing to give it a shot. I did notice that a lot of the companies recruiting are call centers.

I am getting a bit frustrated with the police departments hiring/not hiring. I have been patiently waiting for a full time job to open up. I thought I had one lined up then the city manager put in a hiring freeze. There are a few jobs that have gotten approved as critical but they are temp positions: full time hours but no benefits. I am going to continue pursuing other options, I am finding it hard to fill up that extra 20 hours a week. It is great to have the time, but with limited resources, it is not as fun as it could be.

My nifty little scanner arrived yesterday. It is as small as I remember, the size of a pager. I hope it works well at the track. I got some extra batteries to take a long with me this weekend. The literature said the battery life is around 3 hours. That’s long enough for a race but not long enough for practice and a race. I confirmed Sabas arrangements for the weekend, I will be dropping him off at his girlfriends place. What a lucky dog he is!
