Worker bee mode and who will be the new boss?
06/13/2007

I landed in the office Monday morning to a pile of paper on my desk.

I am sure you know the feeling. I sorted, filed and moved it into workable stacks. It was just part of being out of the office for a few days. I was sharing my photos with a couple of friends at the office and they agreed Helio Castoneves is Hot. Yah, I had a bit of fun with the photos. I wonder sometimes if I am way off base. I double checked with one of the psychology folks at work: a fantasy is fine as long as you know it is not reality.

My friend Cranky was asking me about this also and I got to wondering: Does a simple conversation with a well know figure leave an impression? Do they even remember that moment? I know it appears huge in my mind; I carry that snippet of time around with me. I hate to say it, but probably not. When I was doing a lot more work in the music industry, we would have fans line up, fans that were scary, fans that were fun. I do think the musicians enjoyed the attention, it was an ego boost, but I recall it was just “part of the job” more often than not.

I do have a friend that is quite popular here in Austin. We had a funny conversation one night late in the evening after the bars closed. I was getting hassled by a guy at the club, he just wouldn’t leave me alone. D. said he was perhaps the only guy that could really understand that feeling. He has his share of stalkers, his “hard core” fans and other folks that wanted to live vicariously through him. We had a good laugh that night, it was interesting to hear that from a guy.

Monday after work, I spent 4 ˝ hours at the public meeting of the “fabulous five” candidates for the new police chief. The city manger was there, listening to the feedback from the participants. I took my spot in the “vivacious” room with the local activists. A couple of times I wanted to crawl under my chair. I am glad most of them didn’t make the connection to where exactly I work. Some of their comments were just not very nice. I thought the feedback session at the end was a good idea. I hope the city manager will take the comments into consideration when she makes her decision on Friday. I am just ready to get this over with. It has been a year of a “acting” chief, it’s way past time for a decision on who the new boss will be.
