Local, regional and international news
06/21/2007

Work followed me home yesterday.

I ambled into work yesterday, expecting an easy Wednesday, that was not the case. I arrived at the office after getting caught in the rain on my walk to work and saw lots of activity on the board. There were detectives on the board that should have been home, not out and about. I turned the corner and saw a new case listed. I checked with the Sergeant and yes, there was a murder Tuesday night.

The unit was full of activity; a man was beaten to death the night before by a group of people. There was little sleep to be had by the people working the case. It was an all night investigation. My telephones were busy all day long. There was a parade of Chiefs calling and coming up to the unit. I called Cranky at lunch time to let her know I might be staying late at work. I told her I would call and let her know if I had to change plans. She was shocked when she read the local papers news release when we were on the telephone.

The other Sergeant asked me later on in the day as I handed him some of the press releases what the reaction was. I told him about my lunch conversation with Cranky and her reaction to the news. I knew the PIO office was busy all afternoon long but I wasn’t expecting what I saw next.

I managed to get out of the office on time and just wanted to go home. I was looking to see what else was in the news and it was the lead story locally of course. I popped over to another TX news source, it was the headline. I hopped over to the NY papers and it was on the AP News Wire. I figured I could go international to get away from the case and headed over to the BBC World News and there it was. The story out of Austin TX leading Fox News, CNN and all the sites I hit.

I turned my computer off, it was time to leave work at work and not let it creep into my home. I headed out to the grocery and continued my daily routine. I watched the local TV news before trying to get to sleep last night. That’s my usual bedtime routine, but I was disturbed by the coverage. I turned off the television, had a “chat” with Saba and tired to settle down for the evening. It took a bit of extra time last night.

I figure it will be a long day today. I am going to wear something extra nice and extra comfortable. I guess there will be lots more activity again today.
