A little bit of old Austin.
10/03/2007

I was leaving work yesterday and had to stop, I heard a familiar voice.

The street was blocked off for a benefit concert: Health alliance for Austin Musicians (myHAAM.org) and there was an old friend on stage singing her songs. Shelly King and her band were playing. It sure was a nice treat. I decided to skip my yoga class and stay downtown for part of the evening. I listened, tapped my toes and had a great little adventure. Shelly is a fabulous song writer, fun to watch on stage along with her band. I stopped and said hi, got caught up a little bit with each of the members. When the next band was on stage (I hate to admit, I can’t remember who it was), I ran into the sax player from Joe King Carrasco’s band. We chatted quite a while and I flirted a bit. It was nice to have some fun as I waited for them to go on stage. They played nice set, a bit of lively music and then the headliner was due up next. Vallejo.

I remember when Alex and AJ Vallajo were playing Steamboat, Tuesday nights when you had to bring your tickets so the band could get a good count and move up to a better time slots. I saw on the internet, they are releasing a new album soon; they sure looked good on the little stage in the middle of 6th street. They still sound fabulous, the guys have that stage presence and the music is just tight. I can’t wait to listen to the new album when it gets released.

I had to run and catch the bus; I couldn’t stay for the whole show, I was a bit disappointed, I hate to walk away from good, live music before it is done. As I was waiting for my ride to the house, I thought to myself: this is the way it should be, the way it used to be: Work hard during the day and have a bit of fun in the evening. See friends, sing along as they play and relax a bit.

I have been running into people from my past a lot recently, chance meetings or emails. I love getting caught up with each of them. I just wonder what that means…or if there is a meaning.
