Thanks ESPN, great race watching!
Tires, cautions and wrecked cars blew the race. Indy was not what anyone was expecting. One of the most historical tracks and the Good Year Tires were a mess. Crews kept trying to change pressures, track bars, wedges and just say a prayer to stay in the race. When the tires went, it sounded like an explosion and the fenders ripped off.
The game plan soon became just make it to the end. Try to stay in the race until the next competition caution. 20 laps per segment to each yellow flag. Two tires then four tires then two tires. Change the wedge, change the pressures, change the chasses and make lots of adjustments. It looked like short track, local racing with the number of cautions thrown.
One of the reporters asked one of the crew chiefs: how many tires do you have left? “There worth gold right now, I would have to kill you if I told you how many I had left.” Tire strategy paid off and the 48 found the checkers.
Congrats Chad Knaus on a great finish along with your driver Jimmy Johnson. Enjoy the milk & kiss those bricks.
