Two hot dates with my pillow.
07/30/2008

The phone rang at 1:30 Monday morning.

I knew no one was going to be whispering sweet nothings in my ear when the phone rang; it was going to be work. It turned out there were two murders, a couple of minuets apart a couple miles apart. I headed into the office and got started on a very long day.

I learned years ago what I need to do when I get called to work in the middle of the night, especially during the week. When I am talking on the phone, I start the coffee. I throw together some breakfast items and some lunch and then hop in the shower. I can at least get started on a good note for those long days. I know I have something to eat, some sodas with me for later in the day. I often don’t get a break for hours, but with my lunch packed as soon as I have a few people in the office, I can duck out and get my lunch. I gave up waiting for help from outside my unit, it never arrives. The Sergeants are busy with the investigations and of course the detectives are busy tracking down witnesses and leads.

I answered lots of phone calls, relayed lots of messages, and did lots of record searching for both sets of detectives in the field. It was a bit confusing with the two events happening at once the other night.

I realized sometime in the morning, I forgot to turn the alarm off before I left the house in a rush. Poor Saba, he had to listen to it for a while. Good thing it has an automatic shut off. I don't know how long it goes off for, but it eventually shuts its self off.

I left the office at 6:15 after working 16 hours and headed to the grocery. I had the car and I had a plan: I needed coffee, and milk and then had a hot date with my pillow.

Tuesday I got into the office and things were still in full swing. I spent most of the day relaying messages, doing searches and catching up with some of the paperwork I am required to keep up. I did print up a copy of a report, with out the double check from a supervisor, and gave it to the Lieutenant. I tried to explain to him that it was incomplete in some areas, due to my not getting briefed on all the cases. He said he would highlight the changes for me, but I never received it back.

Last night I stayed a bit late but managed to get out in time for my yoga class. That was definitely what I needed to take care of me. Once I finally got home, I rummaged for some food and then had another date with my pillow.
