It was a happy day but a sad day.

A retirement party.
I headed out this morning a bit early; I knew I would be taking a long lunch. My friend and co-worker had his retirement lunch today. I am so glad I got the pleasure to meet him and work with him and be able to call him my friend. He spent 23 years with the police department.
He has such a fabulous reputation. He is the best detective I have ever met: his morals have never been questioned. He chased down some of the worst criminals in the area, worked some of the toughest cases you can imagine and never lost his cool. He would talk with the families and help them understand. He was a fabulous teacher. He could make you smile through anything. I knew if the pressure got too much, my friend, my teacher and my mentor would crack a joke and make the laughter appear.
It was my turn to make him laugh: I sent him a page this afternoon: “Why are you looking that this thing??? You are retired now”. He still has one day left on Friday: he will turn in his gear, get rid of the pager. He did call me back: I was able to say; I got you this time…
I will miss my friend; I am excited he will be starting his new adventure: retirement.
