Thump, thump thump.
12/28/2008

It was the base vibrating the place.

I was at the casa de’devota last night, winding down a boring day. I headed to the bedroom to curl up with Saba for the night. I hit the pillow and then it started…Thump, thump thump, thump. It was a base coming from a car. I was mildly annoyed and figured is was just someone coming or going and it would stop. After about 15 minuets, I put on my robe, headed outside and nothing. No thump, no cars just a bit or city noise in the background. Hum, I guess they just left.

I headed back into the bedroom and Thump, thump thump was still going strong. I put my television on, turned the volume up and kept getting annoyed. It lasted about 45 minuets and then it went away. Yah I thought, perhaps its gone for the night. About 15 minuets later the thumping started all over again. I put my head under my pillow and pretended I didn’t hear it.

I live in Austin Texas, in the city in a barn not far from downtown. One of the quirky things is I live above limestone. There is a “self’ of it under the house, in the neighborhood. Occasionally, the bass sound travels far distances through it. I learned about this a number of years ago. I would have noise in my place, I would walk outside and there was nothing to be heard. Go into the apartment and it was a racket. I thought I was going crazy, but the explanation was the limestone. Occasionally it happens in the Barn. I think the poured foundation makes a difference; it just vibrates up a bit more than the front house that is on pier and beam.

Last night was one of those times. I doubt the player of the racket had any idea they were making such noise. I figure if it vibrates across the neighborhood, it must be bad for their hearing…
