I started with Hip Hop
03/19/2009
and ended a dreamy night with Gary Louris & Mark Olsen
I had started the night before with the Howdy Texas party. I heard the Elliott Brood Band and David Garza. I ran into some out of town folks and got to hear some great music.
I headed out from work Wednesday evening to join in the fun of the first day of SXSW Music. There was a band playing as I had lunch at the picnic table at work and then it just kept getting better as the day went along.
I stopped to listen to a band at an unofficial stage, NOISEFM: http://www.myspace.com/thenoisemusic/, nice sound, good looking band from KS. I headed out to Hip Hop that turned out to be something I was not very interested in, someone had recommended them, but not my style. I left after a couple of songs, that wasn’t a good recommendation for me. I headed over to the music hall for some of the Chronicle Music Awards, saw Susanna Chaffel, Carolyn Wonderland and Ruthie Foster plus a lively band and Bob Snyder with Lonelyland and the Fire Ants band combination.
I headed next to Antones: I got to see Bruce Robison, one of my favorite song writers with the full band and Dell Castillo up next with some new songs off their album coming out soon, I liked the new sound, can’t wait for the disk.
The highlight of my night was Gary Louris and Mark Olsen in a tiny room at the Driskill Hotel. I got a text message from Brett to head over. I had totally missed the listing in the grid and he knows I was a huge Jayhawks fan. We were taking about a gig listed in Austin but neither of us saw it until last night. I am so glad I didn’t miss this one. It was a great room: small with only about a 200 person capacity, in one of the oldest hotels in Austin. The acoustics were great with the wood paneling and the addition of a base player added a punch to the music. The harmonies were wonderful and I was just thrilled to see the two together again performing.
I managed to get to the house about 2:00 am and am getting ready to head out for a full day of parties this afternoon.
