Design and Moving:
04/17/2009
The other day I started to move into my new work space.
I brought a few items into the office: some wall art, some pink memo paper and some assorted office items. I headed to the new office space in the morning and hung the pictures on the wall: I wanted to keep them off the ground and out of the workman’s way. I managed to move a box in the morning and was told to hold off until I could get with my new office mate before moving anything else.
I was running around trying to get travel money for the cold case detectives through the paperwork bureaucracy. They had the wrong forms, the wrong signatures and needed more approvals. I had to make a stop in finance and when I was waiting for the approvals, I was told a bit more about the new project, the budget aspects of the move and given a broader picture of my new position. I felt more encouraged by that information.
Late in the afternoon I was able to get with my new office mate. We worked on the layout of the space. I was firm with my desk layout: I do not want wires and cords hanging and crossing the floor. I may be facing a blank wall, but for me it is a better design than the one that was proposed. Sometimes it’s about function and flow not the aesthetics. I did get a chance to shake hands and introduce myself to the commander I will be working for: he assured me we will get together once I get through my transitional training next week. I let him know I was excited about the new opportunity and was looking forward to the change.
I felt a glimmer of light yesterday, I think this transition will work it’s self out. I think when I look back a year from now, I will be wondering why I was feeling so stressed about the change.
